DRIVERS.EXEm installation instructions

How do I install this program?

The file DRIVE204.ZIP (or later) is crunched using PKZIP 204g. If you don't have PKZIP 2.04g. you should download it from the internet.

Here are brief installation instructions:

0. Download DRIVE204.ZIP from this web page. Make sure you remember where your computer downloaded it to. For the rest of these directions, I'll assume you downloaded it to the location 'C:\TEMP\DRIVE235.ZIP'.

1. Exit your web browser and log off the internet.

2. Get to your DOS prompt

3. Switch to the DRIVE that you want to use (most people do not need to do this step) [for example, type C: and press (enter) ]

4. Create a new directory called MAZEMAN, type:

MD \MAZEMAN (enter)

(remember the back slash)

5. Create a second directory called DRIVERS, type:

MD \MAZEMAN\DRIVERS (enter)

6. Change to that directory, type:

CD \MAZEMAN\DRIVERS (enter)

7. To unzip the file, type

PKUNZIP C:\temp\DRIVE204

This will install the DRIVERS.EXEm program plus all supporting files into the \MAZEMAN\DRIVERS directory. You might have to precede this command by the drive and directory where PKUNZIP is stored.

8. If the file "DRIVSTUD.NTS" and/or "DRIVEUSE.LOG" are present, delete them. This allows you to start over with ZERO students.

9. Use the appropriate BATch file for the program mode that you wish to execute. You can use the directions for your version of Windows to set up an icon. Here are your choices:

>>> DRIVERS.BAT - this is the default program mode. You may want to think of "DRIVERS" as standing for "DRIVER (S)ilent".

>>> DRIVERSB.BAT - if you have a 16-bit SoundBlaster compatible card, you can use "DRIVER (S)ound (B)laster" to start the program. This version of the program will "read" the test to the student using your sound blaster programs. You may have to edit the batch file to point to the location where you store your soundblaster files. Some students may have difficulty understanding the computer's synthetic voice.

>>> DRIVER-T.BAT - if your system speaker is connected (most are) and if it's of good enough quality (many aren't), you can use this version of the program to read the test questions over your computer system's built-in speaker. Many students will have difficulty understanding the synthetic voice. It is much worse than the SoundBlaster's voice. Think of this version of the program as standing for "DRIVER (T)alk". All the programs you need to run this version of the program are included.

>>> D-SINGLE.BAT - If you use the "(D)rive SINGLE" command, the program bypasses the name and password routine and automatically runs the program for the FIRST person in the DRIVSTUD.NTS file. If you delete the DRIVSTUD.NTS file, the next time you run D-SINGLE.BAT, the computer will ask for the name and password for a new student.

>>> D-SURVEY.BAT - Use the "(D)rive SURVEY" command if you want to keep statistical answers, such as sex, age, occupation, etc., on all the people who run this program. This is NOT a well documented feature of the program. If you need to use it, there are other files that you need to study.

10. Though I cannot guarantee every computer system compatibility, these programs should work with Windows 3.0, Windows 3.1, Windows 95, and under any version of MS-DOS, as long as your IBM compatible system has a VGA monitor. I decided, early on, NOT to support any prior monitor types, so if you have EGA, CGA or any other earlier monitor, I will not guarantee what will happen, nor do I plan to upgrade the program to handle those monitors.

I think that the DRIVE-SB.BAT program will work with any of the older soundblaster cards (16-bit). I do NOT think the routine will work with 32-bit cards, but you may attempt it if you wish. The worst that will happen is that you'll have to press Ctrl+Alt+Del to get out of the program. Later, after I have issued programs for all 50 states, I might come back and do an upgrade for 32-bit cards, but I make no promises here.
